Dominican Republic participated on meeting of heads of Latin American IP Offices

By Guzmán Ariza, Attorneys at Law

The Regional Meeting of Heads of Industrial Property Offices of Latin American Countries took place at Lima, Peru, from October 4 to 6, 2022, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) of Peru. The event brought together 16 Heads Offices from across Latin America to swap ideas and share best practices.

The objective was to facilitate the exchange ideas and best practices to allow for the design of a collaborative platform among the IP Offices of the region. Focus was put in the creation of synergies to strengthen the IP and innovation ecosystem, including through the digitization of IP services.

The sixteen Latin American countries that participated were: Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Daren Tang, Director General of the WIPO, declared that with trademark filings across the region growing, venture capital investments increasing and Latin America being a dynamic engine of the global creative economy, governments, businesses and communities across the region are paying attention to IP as never before.

Mr. Tang pledged WIPO's ongoing support as IP Offices across Latin America continue their transformation journey, including through the creation of new projects that bring IP to the grassroots, unlocking IP financing for SMEs and supporting the uptake of WIPO's Madrid System for the international registration of trademarks across the region. Mr. Tang also led delegates in a wide-ranging and interactive dialogue on the developments that are shaping IP policy in Latin America.

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) also participated, discussing the ways to strengthen cooperation ties with the Latin American region. Mr. Masanori Katsura, Deputy Commissioner of the JPO, made his presentation about cooperation between Latin American countries and the JPO, and discussed with participants about modernizing the IP Offices.
