The Future is AI: How the Dominican Republic is Preparing for the Next Wave of Innovation
By Guzmán Ariza, Attorneys at Law

The Dominican Republic has a national strategy on AI called the National Innovation Policy 2030. The policy was launched in 2021 and aims to make the Dominican Republic a leader in the use of AI for economic and social development by investing in research and development in AI, developing a skilled workforce in AI, creating a regulatory framework for AI that is both supportive and responsible, and promoting international cooperation in AI
The policy is based in the country’s strong track record in innovation and a young, tech-savvy population. It identifies four key areas where AI can be used to create value:
-Public sector: AI can be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government services, such as healthcare, education, and transportation.
-Private sector: AI can be used to boost productivity and innovation in businesses of all sizes.
-Education: AI can be used to improve the quality of education and make it more accessible to everyone.
-Society: AI can be used to address social challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.
On June 2023, the Government Office of Information and Communication Technologies (OGTIC) opened a public citizen consultation as part of the process of building the Policy. This consultation is an opportunity for citizens to contribute their perspectives, recommendations, and knowledge to enrich the design and implementation of this important public policy.
In addition to the National Innovation Policy 2030, the Dominican Republic is also participating in a number of regional initiatives on AI, such as the GEALC Network and the IA-CKATÓN. These initiatives are helping to promote the use of AI in the public sector and to build a skilled workforce in AI.
