United States and Dominican Republic Sign Bilateral Air Transport Agreement

The Government of the Dominican Republic and the Government of the United States signed a Memorandum of Consultations, marking the conclusion of negotiations on a bilateral Air Transport Agreement (also known as an “Open Skies” agreement).

This proposed agreement, once signed and entered into force, will meet the highest standard of aviation transportation agreements, opening the door for the United States and the Dominican Republic to expand the two countries’ bilateral aviation relationship.

The agreement was signed by Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment of the United States, Jose W. Fernandez, and Minister of Tourism David Collado from the Dominican Republic, at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

The United States seeks to have open aviation relationships with its partners, and whenever possible, establishes pro-competitive agreements that allow air carriers to offer a variety of services tailored to meet the needs of their passengers without restrictions on numbers of flights or destinations.

Under an Open Skies agreement, airlines can provide more affordable, convenient, and efficient air services to consumers by minimizing limitations on airline decisions about routes, number of flights, and inter-airline partnerships.  These modern aviation agreements are pro-consumer, pro-competition, and pro-growth arrangements which allow more international passenger and cargo flights between our two countries.
