Our partner, Giselle Perez Reyes, took part in the first meeting of the Working Group for the Sargassum Valuation Plan in the Dominican Republic. The event brought together key stakeholders to identify solutions to facilitate investment and public-private cooperation.
This is a joint effort between the Government of the Dominican Republic and the European Union, with the aim of providing a platform to foster the development of sustainable sargassum value chains in a collective and interconnected manner.
Sargassum invasions have become a chronic ecological, health, and economic crisis. This floating seaweed—once a distant oceanic phenomenon—is now a persistent threat to biodiversity, tourism, fisheries, and coastal communities.
The initiative aims to reduce the damage caused by these algae and integrate them into the circular economy, where, for example, sargassum would be transformed into cosmetics, fertilizers, electricity and biomass. It also includes aspects related to monitoring, research and the mobilisation of resources to maximise impact for tackling and optimising both region’s joint approach.
