By Goodrich, Riquelme y Asociados

In line with international cooperation efforts aimed at fostering development and shared prosperity in Mexico, Santiago Nieto, Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), met with Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). During their meeting, the leaders of both organizations agreed to work together to promote innovation and optimize the use of industrial property in favor of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and strategic sectors.
Among the key topics discussed were cooperation to strengthen Mexico’s innovation ecosystem, developing cross-sector public policies with WIPO’s support; establishing mechanisms to measure countries' efforts in industrial property protection and combating piracy and counterfeiting; and maximizing the tools, advice, and training activities promoted by WIPO.
This collaboration is critical as Mexico continues to improve its innovation capabilities. According to the 2024 Global Innovation Index (GII), Mexico ranks 56th out of 133 economies. The GII evaluates economies based on their innovation capabilities using around 80 indicators, grouped into innovation inputs and outputs, to capture the multi-dimensional nature of innovation. Notably, Mexico ranks 3rd among the 20 economies in Latin America and the Caribbean, reflecting the country’s growing role in regional and global innovation.}
By focusing on strengthening the protection of industrial property and fostering innovation, Mexico aims to further enhance its competitiveness and support the growth of its MSMEs in key sectors, contributing to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
