15 websites permanently blocked for copyright infringement

The Copyright Department of the Intellectual Property Office of Peru (Indecopi) announced that in 2018 a total of 15 websites were permanently blocked for the infringement of copyright and related rights. All websites reproduced works, productions and broadcasts without proper copyright authorization, therefore affecting the holders legit right over those contents. One of the websites illegally allowed the reproduction of music songs and albums, with more than 130,000 unique monthly users, while others broadcasted extracts of soccer games.

In 2018 Indecopi also reduced the cable television piracy by 51%. According to studies conducted by consultancy agency JP Partners, pirate operators decreased from 154 in 2016, to 116 in 2017, and to 76 in 2018.

Such advances are framed by national policies while also by international agreements that Peru signed in 2018, such as the ratification of the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances (which deals with the intellectual property rights of performers in audiovisual performances) and the WIPO’s Publishers Circle, which contributes to a viable, globally connected and efficient national book publishing industry in developing countries.
