18 thousand country code top-level domains in Guatemala

The Registry Domain of Guatemala (GT), the entity in charge of mantaining the registry of Internet domain names with the country code assigned to Guatemala, estimates to close 2016 with a record 18,000 domains with the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) .gt.

Luis R. Furlán, director of the Registry Domain, even expects that number to "fire up" next year as the entity plans to launch a new form of domains registration that will establish registrars in different parts of the world.

According to Prensa Libre, Guatemala currently has 17,555 .gt domains: 11,287 are com.gt (for commercial entities use), 800 .org.gt (which identify international organizations and other entities) and 591 .edu.gt, used for educational institutions recognized by the Ministry of Education and for higher education institutions recognized by the Council of Private Higher Education. Under the ccTLD gob.gt there are 496 domains which are used for Guatemalan governmental entities and just 36 individuals have their own domain name under ind.gt.
