Geographical indications (GI) are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. The term, in its broad sense, includes a variety of concepts used in international treaties and national/regional jurisdictions, such as appellations of origin (AO).
Collective marks are trademarks owned and used by members of a collective that aim to empower entrepreneurs and SMEs in developing countries to add value to their products and services.
