Agreement to Reinforce Guatemala’s Science and Innovation Capabilities

By Mayora IP

The Guatemalan office of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the National Secretariat for Science and Technology (SENACYT) signed a framework agreement to support the country’s scientific research, technological development, and innovation systems.

The agreement includes two strategic components. One is titled “Bringing Science to Everyone: Strategies for Scientific Dissemination and Education”, which focuses on making science and its evidence more accessible to the general public. The other, “E-SENACYT”, is a digital platform designed to enhance connectivity, integration, and institutional capacity within Guatemala’s national science, technology, and innovation ecosystem. This platform was selected through OEI’s competitive funding calls aimed at promoting digital transformation in the Ibero-American science and technology sectors.

Earlier in 2025, the SENACYT approved its 2025 work agenda during a National Science and Technology Council (CONCYT) meeting. The agenda includes projects of international cooperation with Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Panama, institutional strengthening of Guatemala’s science and technology system, and support for national scientific and technological research.

On the regional front, Guatemala has engaged in broader collaborative efforts. In March 2025, it adhered to a letter of intent aimed at advancing an open and inclusive regional policy for science, technology, and innovation in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
