Ahead of Christmas, Peru Tightens Oversight on Pirated Imports

Bringing pirated or counterfeit goods—such as merchandise using unauthorized images or characters—into the country constitutes a violation of copyright law. INDECOPI has stated that sanctions may reach 180 UIT (Tax Reference Units), equivalent to roughly S/ 963,000, which translates to approximately USD 250,000.

Those found in violation not only face large fines but may have their merchandise confiscated, and authorities may order the closure of the commercial premises involved. The government emphasizes that importers must comply not only with customs and health regulations, but also with intellectual property laws.

The announcement arrives as Peru approaches a high trade volume season, serving as a reminder to international businesses, logistics operators, and importers that compliance with IP laws is non-negotiable. Failure to respect licensing and copyright rules can result in significant financial and operational consequences in Peru’s marketplace.
