Andean Community launches initiative to strengthen regional air connectivity

Authorities, aviation regulators, airlines, airport operators and industry representatives from the four member countries of the Andean Community (CAN) gathered in Bolivia for the launch of "Andean Skies" (Cielos Andinos), a regional initiative aimed at improving air connectivity and promoting greater integration across Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The program seeks to identify barriers affecting regional air transport and develop coordinated measures to facilitate passenger and cargo movement.

The initiative was presented during a regional forum organized by the CAN General Secretariat, where participants discussed opportunities to expand air routes, improve airport infrastructure and strengthen cooperation among civil aviation authorities. According to the organization, enhanced connectivity is expected to support trade, tourism, investment and the mobility of people within the Andean region while contributing to broader economic integration.

The Andean Community noted that, despite progress in regional integration, air transport between member countries continues to face operational, regulatory and infrastructure challenges. The "Andean Skies" initiative is intended to promote dialogue between governments and the aviation industry to identify practical solutions that facilitate market access, increase flight frequencies and improve regional connectivity without compromising aviation safety or regulatory oversight.

Air transport plays an important role in the Andean economy, particularly given the region's diverse geography, which includes mountain ranges, the Amazon basin and remote territories where air services are essential for connecting communities and supporting commercial activity. Improved connectivity is also viewed as a means of strengthening regional value chains and facilitating cross-border business operations.

Established under the 1969 Cartagena Agreement, the Andean Community comprises Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru and promotes economic integration through the free movement of goods, services and people, as well as the harmonization of regional regulations. In recent years, the bloc has expanded cooperation in areas including digital integration, customs modernization, transport and telecommunications as part of its broader regional agenda.

The launch of "Andean Skies" builds on previous regional efforts to facilitate aviation cooperation, including the gradual liberalization of air transport services among member states. By bringing together public authorities and private-sector stakeholders, the initiative seeks to establish a roadmap for improving connectivity while encouraging greater coordination on aviation policies and infrastructure development.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of air cargo in supporting regional trade, particularly for time-sensitive exports such as agricultural products, pharmaceuticals and high-value manufactured goods. More efficient air transport networks can reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain resilience and expand access to international markets for businesses operating within the Andean region.
