Brazil: INPI to Discuss Recent Changes to the Trademark System
By Dannemann Siemsen

The event will bring together INPI officials and specialists from the private sector. It will take place at 10:00 a.m. Brasília time and will be the first session of a new webinar series organized by IDS together with representatives of INPI's Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications Directorate (DIRMA). The series will focus on analyzing the changes implemented by the agency during the second half of 2025 and throughout 2026.
The first webinar will focus specifically on the trademark system and will address four areas of recent change: priority processing of trademark applications, examination based on acquired distinctiveness, the so-called "Opposition 2.0," and the new rules for examining marks considered well-known.
The discussion will include Alexandre Lopes Lourenço, director of DIRMA; Leila Silva Campos, general coordinator of Trademarks I; and Elisangela Santos da Silva Borges, general coordinator of Trademarks II. The presence of officials directly involved in managing the trademarks area will allow for an analysis of the practical implications of the changes introduced by INPI.
Representing the private sector will be Elisabeth Siemsen do Amaral and Filipe Fonteles Cabral, partners at Dannemann Siemsen. Siemsen do Amaral is an industrial property agent and a member of the firm's board, with more than 35 years of experience in intellectual property and a practice focused on trademarks, administrative proceedings, litigation, and strategy. She also holds a leadership role within the International Trademark Association (INTA).
Cabral, who will moderate the session, is a partner at Dannemann Siemsen and executive director of IDS. He holds master's degrees and a doctorate in Law and has produced academic work related to, among other topics, data protection and artificial intelligence, as well as patents.
The event will address the recent evolution of trademark examination and administrative management procedures in Brazil and the implications of the measures adopted by INPI since 2025.
The activity will be held virtually, and registration is available through the IDS website.
