CCU and Peru put an end to Suspiro Limeño trademark case

By Francisco Espinosa Reboa

The conflict over a pisco trademark between the Peruvian State and Compañía Pisquera de Chile has come to an end.

In January 2012, Compañía Pisquera de Chile applied at the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inapi) of Chile for the trademark "Suspiro limeño", a new brand of its line of piscos Campanario.

The application was opposed by the embassy of Peru in Santiago de Chile, which argued that the applied trademark refered to a typical Peruvian dessert known by the same name, "Suspiro limeño" ("Limeño sigh"), in reference to Peru´s capital Lima, where the dessert was created during the nineteenth century.

Although the trademark was finally granted by Inapi in November 2014, CCU, the group owner of Compañía Pisquera de Chile, voluntarily withdrew the trademark to avoid further trouble.

"Compañía Pisquera de Chile is preparing an agreement to withdraw the trademark registration of Suspiro Limeño, in order to continue the good relationship with the Republic of Peru and further strengthening ties," said the company in a official statement published by Pulso
