Cher sues Sonny Bono’s widow over copyrights

American singer Cher sued Mary Bono, widow of her late musical partner and ex-husband Sonny Bono, for allegedly withholding her share of royalties in Sonny & Cher songs.The folk rock husband-wife duo was active from 1964–1977. According to the complaint filed by Cher in a Los Angeles court, she was granted a half of Sonny & Cher’s royalties after the she and Bono divorced and ended the duo.
Cher stated that Mary Bono, sole trustee of the Bono Collection Trust that administers Bono’s royalties, terminated her rights from all royalties.
Reuters reported that Cher asked the court for a declaratory judgment that the estate didn’t terminate her rights, and requested at least $1 million in damages for breaching the divorce settlement.
