Cocoa and traceability, together for the industry of Nicaragua
By Guy José Bendaña-Guerrero & Asociados

During his participation, Arana indicated that Nicaragua is working on a national system for the traceability of cocoa. In food processing, traceability refers to the recording through means of barcodes or RFID tags & other tracking media, all movement of product and steps within the production process.
Arana explained that work is being done by public and private organisms to include the genetic fingerprint of the crop and update the technical standards of cocoa, fermented grain and unfermented and post-harvest grain.
With steady growth in production and exports, cocoa plays a major role in the aim of diversification for the Nicaraguan industry and export matrix, while local producers look up to strengthen a global brand for Nicaraguan fine cocoa participating in events like the 4th World Cocoa Conference, which took place in April in Berlin.
