Colombia Grants Denomination of Origin Protection to the Carriel Antioqueño

Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) has formally granted Denomination of Origin (DO) protection to the Carriel Antioqueño, recognizing it not only as an artisanal product but also as a symbol of Colombian cultural identity.
The declaration was made through Resolution No. 72998 of 2025 and announced in Jericó, a municipality in the department of Antioquia widely recognized for its long-standing tradition in the production of the carriel. Under this resolution, the SIC also designated the Association of Traditional Carriel Manufacturers of Antioquia as the body authorized to manage and oversee the use of the protected name.
The carriel is a traditional leather bag historically used by arrieros—muleteers who played a central role in commerce and transportation across the Andean region. Designed to be practical and durable, the carriel traditionally features multiple compartments and is made using artisanal leatherworking techniques passed down through generations.
Over time, the carriel has evolved from a utilitarian object into a powerful cultural symbol associated with the Paisa identity, representing values such as entrepreneurship, mobility and craftsmanship. Its design, materials and production methods are closely tied to Antioquia’s geography, history and social practices.
The recognition of the Carriel Antioqueño as a Denomination of Origin carries implications beyond legal protection. From a cultural perspective, it reinforces the value of traditional craftsmanship as intangible cultural heritage, contributing to its preservation and transmission to future generations.
Economically, the designation can strengthen local production chains, support small-scale artisans and improve market positioning, both domestically and internationally. By differentiating authentic products from imitations, the DO can help ensure that economic benefits remain within the communities that have historically sustained the craft.
This protection means that only artisans who produce the carriel within the defined geographic area and according to established traditional methods may legally use the name “Carriel Antioqueño.” The measure aims to prevent misuse, imitation and commercialization of products that do not meet these criteria.
The protection of the Carriel Antioqueño places it alongside other Colombian products with Denomination of Origin status, such as Café de Colombia and traditional regional foods and crafts. It reflects Colombia’s growing emphasis on intellectual property tools as mechanisms to promote regional development, cultural identity and fair competition.
