Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), through its Delegation for Industrial Property, reported record levels of administrative output in intellectual property matters during the period between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2025, according to official figures released by the authority.
In trademark proceedings, 2025 is projected to be the year with the highest number of decided classes in the history of the SIC, with more than 65,000 trademark classes decided. This represents the highest annual volume recorded in at least the past ten years and reflects a significant increase in examination and decision-making capacity in trademark matters.
With respect to patents and industrial designs, the SIC received 2,253 applications during the period and issued 2,242 decisions, indicating a near one-to-one ratio between filings and resolved cases. In addition, the authority issued 2,798 office actions pursuant to Article 45 of Andean Community Decision 486, which governs substantive examination requirements and formal deficiencies in patent and design applications.
The SIC also reported activity in administrative remedies related to industrial property rights. A total of 8,441 remedies were decided, including 7,965 appeals, 235 reconsideration requests, 207 revocation proceedings, and 38 complaints.
According to the SIC, this increase in output was supported by the 2025 budget allocation, the highest ever granted to the Delegation for Industrial Property, as well as by a public recruitment process for examiners, which strengthened the office’s technical capacity. These measures were aimed at ensuring more timely protection of industrial property rights, particularly in high-volume areas such as trademarks.
From an intellectual property perspective, the figures illustrate both improved institutional capacity and the sustained demand for IP protection in Colombia. Analysts note, however, that maintaining examination quality while handling high volumes of applications will remain a central challenge for the authority in the coming years.
