Commercial agreement with EU will come into force only with Honduras and Nicaragua
The commercial agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU) will come into force the 1st of August only in Honduras and Nicaragua, countries whose legislatures have already ratified and published the agreement in their official journals.

Salvadoran authorities issued a statement confirming that the Agreement will not come into force the 1st of August because of some “issues” with Italy concerning the registration of six geographical indications.

"European Commission Officials have reported that the European Council has not authorized the entry into force of the Agreement in El Salvador and Costa Rica," said the Salvadoran Minister of Economy.

He added that "Italy’s posture is based on the oppositions that have been filed in our country to register six Geographical Indications pertaining five types cheeses and one type of ham."

Costa Rica also announced that the Agreement would not come into force the 1st of August because of the same issue with Italian cheese, and in Guatemala the Agreement will be delayed until the 1st of October because of the delay ratifying the same.

“The Salvadoran government regrets not being able to participate of the benefits of the Association Agreement despite its timely fulfillment of all commitments to the European Union" the statement said.

He stressed that "the oppositions are not only to Italian products, but also to products of France and Spain. However, only Italy has taken the decision to oppose the entry into force of the Association Agreement for El Salvador ".

"Because of this situation, the Salvadoran government will work with European authorities to overcome the differences with Italy in the shortest period of time so that the Agreement can come into force as soon as possible.”

The Agreement with the European Union will come into force this 1st of August only in Honduras and Nicaragua after being ratified by both legislatures.
