On August 15, 2024, construction began on the reconstruction, expansion, and improvement of Punta Huete International Airport. This project aims to position Nicaragua as a key node for transportation, logistics, and international trade.
The airport, a military facility located north of Managua and originally built in the 1980s for combat aircraft, is being overhauled following a 2023 loan agreement with China worth USD 430 million.
Nicaragua’s goal is to enhance its air transport capacity and develop an airport infrastructure of the highest quality in Central America to ensure permanent and secure connections with countries around the world, improve the investment climate, strengthen economic cooperation, and facilitate international air travel, logistics, and trade.
The goal is for the airport to be classified as a 4F facility, which refers to a classification used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to describe the capabilities and size of an airport. Specifically, the 4F category denotes an airport that can accommodate large aircraft and handle high levels of traffic.
