Court authorizes Maradona's lawyer to use its trademark

After Diego Armando Maradona’s death in November 2020, two of the soccer player’s daughters filed a lawsuit against Morla, Maradona’s lawyer, for alleged fraud after the company Sattvica SA filed a total of 147 applications for trademark registrations related to Maradona’s name before the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI) of Argentina. The firm Sattvica SA was set up by Morla on June 2015 and according to the complaint of Maradona’s daughters it was nothing more than a “rubber stamp” to appropriate all trademarks of the soccer star.
A Court issued a precautionary measure that prohibited Sattvica SA the use of the trademark Maradona in any of its forms or pseudonyms and in all parts of the world.
Morla appealed before the National Criminal and Correctional Chamber of the city of Buenos Aires. He argued that his company was the legit and authorized owner of Maradona’s trademark according to an agreement between him and the soccer player, who ordered Morla to send royalties from his trademarks to his sisters.
"Justice was served. Following Diego's will, his brand can now be used by his sisters,” Morla celebrated on an Instagram post.
