Customs seized goods for more than U$S 2 million

In the first six months of 2011, the DNA carried out 1.153 seizure operatives for a total amount of goods of U$S 2.3 million. Last year 2.027 seizures were done for U$S 5.11 million, while 2.045 in 2009 for a total of U$S 4.2 million. According to projections, the DNA expects to end the year with similar numbers as the recorded in the previous ones.
The jewelry leads this list with U$S 614.000 (26%), followed by toys with U$S 329.000 (14%), while drug seizures are located in the third position with U$S 292.000 (13%).
Jewelry includes high quality products that enter in huge quantities from Buenos Aires and that have the most famous Uruguayan summer resorts as their principal destination.
Other seized items are clothing products (U$S 244.000, , 8%) bearing well-known brands, which are distributed in fairs, shops and stalls come mostly from “La Salada” market in Buenos Aires and entered into the Uruguayan territory through the cities of Colonia, Fray Bentos and Paysandú (all of them in the border with Argentina).
Then cab be found in the aforementioned list the following goods: videogames (U$S 192.000), money ($S 130.000), CDs(U$S 118.000), vehicles (U$S 57.800) and cigarettes (U$S 48.700).
