Gabriel Juárez, head of the Technology Department of the Ministry, acknowledged the importance of creating awareness about cybersecurity throughout the population. “Everybody must keep this issue in mind, since it is a priority for Guatemala working forward as the country lacks a law to specifically fight it”, Juárez said.
With the National Cybersecurity Strategy, Guatemala aims to implement measures to prevent, investigate and prosecute computer and intellectual property crimes, recruiting and training technical experts and developing standardized practices and tools. The country looks to share experiences with academic institutions, foreign counterparts and the private sector, the most affected by the issue: according to statistics, 80 percent of cyberattacks occur in companies.
