The Dominican Republic has officially joined the Artemis Accords, becoming the latest nation to commit to advancing the principles of safe, transparent, and responsible space exploration. With this agreement, the Dominican Republic becomes part of a growing coalition of 44 countries working alongside NASA to explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed pride in the Dominican Republic's participation, stating: “We are excited to welcome the Dominican Republic as the latest signatory of the Artemis Accords, as we continue to extend the peaceful exploration of space to all nations. The Dominican Republic has made significant progress in space exploration and is now contributing to the guidance of space exploration for the Artemis Generation.”
On October 4, 2024, Sonia Guzmán, the Dominican Republic's Ambassador to the United States, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of her country. The Dominican Republic also took part in a high-level meeting of Artemis Accords signatories, during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. At this meeting, participants discussed how to further implement the principles outlined in the Accords.
The Artemis Accords were first signed in 2020 by the United States and seven other nations. They establish a framework of principles designed to promote the peaceful and responsible use of space for the benefit of all humanity. Rooted in the Outer Space Treaty and supported by agreements like the Registration Convention and the Rescue and Return Agreement, the Accords also emphasize the importance of transparency, including the public sharing of scientific data.
The commitments made under the Artemis Accords, and the ongoing efforts to implement these principles, aim to ensure that space exploration is conducted safely, sustainably, and for the collective benefit of all nations. As the program progresses, more countries are expected to join in the coming months.
