A new cooperation agreement between Italy’s Macfrut international fruit and vegetable exhibition and the government of the Dominican Republic has been formalized in Santo Domingo, marking a strategic effort to strengthen institutional ties and promote Dominican producers’ access to Italian and European markets.
The three-year partnership — signed by senior representatives of Macfrut and the Dominican Ministries of Agriculture and of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs — frames a broader technical and scientific collaboration that will extend through upcoming editions of the Rimini-based fair and related activities.
Under the agreement, Macfrut will share sector expertise and provide targeted support for Dominican fruit and vegetable operators. This includes technical training, business-to-business (B2B) meetings, and opportunities for Dominican producers to visit Italian firms to observe machinery, post-harvest technologies and other agro-industrial systems widely deployed in Europe.
The cooperation is intended to make operational dialogue more stable and mutually beneficial, facilitating stronger institutional and industry links between Italy and the Dominican Republic, particularly in tropical fruit export segments such as avocado and mango.
As part of the agreement, the Dominican Republic will participate in Macfrut 2026 — scheduled for 21–23 April at the Rimini Expo Centre — with a 400-square-metre institutional pavilion where national institutions, exporters, buyers and producers can showcase products and engage with international partners.
Officials from both countries and representatives from multilateral organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) participated in the signing, underscoring the broader diplomatic and economic interest in deepening cooperation across the agro-industrial value chain.
Beyond the formal pact, the Dominican government has also announced initiatives to use this collaboration as a platform for boosting competitiveness and export readiness. Programmes related to mango and avocado — two key export products — are being positioned as anchors for broader supply-chain development, with industry actors preparing for expanded engagement at Macfrut and other international venues.
