Dr. Santiago Nieto Castillo Appointed Director General of IMPI

On October 10, 2024, New Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo appointed Dr. Santiago Nieto Castillo as the Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). His appointment follows approval by the IMPI Governing Board.

Dr. Santiago Nieto holds a law degree from the Autonomous University of Querétaro and a doctorate in law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has a strong background in law, academia, and public administration, having held various significant positions.

He also coordinated a major investigation into a fraudulent scheme in the State of Hidalgo and led the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), implementing strategies to combat financial crime and safeguard public safety. Dr. Nieto also served as a specialized prosecutor for electoral crimes and as a regional electoral magistrate.

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) is responsible for promoting and protecting industrial property rights in Mexico, which includes patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. IMPI plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and competitiveness within the country.

IMPI aims to strengthen the culture of industrial property at both national and international levels. Dr. Nieto is expected to streamline processes for citizens and enhance efforts against piracy and smuggling.
