The 2023 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) takes the pulse of global innovation trends against the background of an economic environment fraught with uncertainty. It reveals the ranking of this year’s most innovative economies in the world amongst 132 economies and localizes the top 100 science and technology innovation clusters.
For the 13th year in a row, Switzerland is the most innovative economy in 2023 followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
Regarding Latin America, Brazil (49th) makes it into the top 50 in 2023, following a gradual ascent over recent years. Uruguay (63rd) and El Salvador (95th) are the only two other economies within the region that improve their ranking in 2023.
Globally, El Salvador is one of only even economies that have raised their performance status from below expectation to matching expectation.
The GII 2023 uses 80 indicators to track global innovation trends in 130-plus economies, guiding policy makers and business leaders in stimulating human ingenuity. This year, the report’s findings are unveiled against a background of slow economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, high interest rates and geopolitical conflicts.
