El Salvador ratifies the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances
The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador ratified on February 25 the Beijing Treaty, which deals with the intellectual property rights of performers in audiovisual performances.

Through the ratification of the Treaty "it shall continue the protection of performers and artists on their audiovisual performances, which can be dances, plays, music videos, movies, TV shows and digital works, among others" said Karina Sosa, president of the Foreign Commission.

The Commission, which conducted the study of the Treaty file, consulted and was advised by several artists organizations and officials of the National Registration Center (CNR), "who contributed to the discussion in order to determine the relevance of the ratification", explained Sosa to La Prensa Gráfica.

The Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances was adopted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), on June 24, 2012, and was signed by El Salvador on November 7 of that same year.

The Treaty deals with the intellectual property rights of performers in audiovisual performances. It grants performers four kinds of economic rights for their performances fixed in audiovisual fixations, such as motion pictures: (i) the right of reproduction; (ii) the right of distribution; (iii) the right of rental; and (iv) the right of making available. The term of protection must be at least 50 years.
