El Salvador should make “full use” of Chinese importers
China's Ambassador to El Salvador, Ou Jianhong, is confident that both countries will increase bilateral cooperation and agree on future projects, a year after they established diplomatic relations. "China-El Salvador ties have broad prospects and great potential”, said Ou to Xinhua News Agency, the official state-run press agency of China. On August 21, 2018, China and El Salvador signed a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations, with China willing to achieve joint development and contribute to the collective rejuvenation of the developing countries.

Ou specifically mentioned practical cooperation in investment, tourism and cultural exchange. He said that El Salvador’s government, companies and businessmen should “better present” their products and services to Chinese buyers making “full use” of the China International Import Expo, an exhibition created in 2018 to trade liberalization and economic globalization and actively open the Chinese market to the world. Its second edition will be held from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai.

El Salvador is one of the 19 countries in Latin America that have signed cooperation agreements with China to jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative, a China’s project to improve connectivity and cooperation on a transcontinental scale. Trade volume between the two countries reached around USD 1.01 billion in 2018. China has now become the second largest exporter to El Salvador, and Salvadoran exports to China have also seen robust growth, with coffee topping the list.
