Essay Contest

The main points of the survey concluded that:
• People lack of a sense of guilt when buying counterfeit or unauthorized products.
• The most popular items are: music cd´s, movies and apparels. Most people show indifference toward piracy, falsification or smuggling.
• Most people consider that counterfeiting and smuggling are means for less fortunate people to make their living.
• People are frightened and reject counterfeit medication and food. However they do not see any problem with contraband.
The main problem is the lack of education and knowledge among people, mostly on the negative effects on these kinds of illicit activities. The “Culture of Legality” should be inculcated, and “Mentes Innovadoras” (Innovative Minds) will collaborate with this objective.
“Mentes Innovadoras” is a project organized and promoted by the IP Committee of the Paraguayan AmCham within the frame of its “Communication Strategy on the Fight Against Counterfeiting, Piracy and Contraband”, and will aim to raise people´ awareness on the importance of Intellectual Property for the economical and social development of our country, through the promotion of the investigation among students in its two categories: University Students and Post Graduate Students.
The Paraguayan AmCham´s intention is to educate young people on the danger of buying non authentic products, change their opinions and attitudes, and on a bigger scale change the behavior of Paraguayans toward Intellectual Property.
On July 2010 the best essay will be chosen, and we are already eager to meet the innovative author.
Berkemeyer is a member of the IP SubCommitte at the Amcham, and will continue collaborating on this on others communication strategies on enforcing Intellectual Property Rights in Paraguay.
