The decision comes after a first ruling ordered the UCR to pay for fees when applying for trademark registrations before Costa Rica’s intellectual property office (Registro Nacional). The Office argued that since 2017 a new law established that the university was no longer exempt of paying such taxes.Th Proinnova, an office that within its functions seeks to protect the results of the investigation and all the manifestations that derive from the academic function.
“One of our responsibilities is to watch over intangible assets, that intellectual heritage that is produced at the University. This is a great point that marks our office ”, stated Geannina Sojo Navarro, director of Proinnova.
The UCR is one of the main IP producers in the country. It has a Technology Transfer Office (PROINNOVA) which handles all innovative projects from the university’s three main pillars (research, social action and teaching) and six knowledge areas (arts and literature, social sciences, engineering, basic science, agriculture and food sciences and health). PROINNOVA manages, protects and transfers knowledge for innovation generated by the UCR and also promotes, advices and provides training in creativity, innovation, competitive intelligence and intellectual property in order to impact external sectors.
It evaluates the potential of the UCR’s knowledge, protects its intellectual property and transfer it for profit or non-profit organizations cooperating with vulnerable populations. It also provides advisory and training in creativity, competitive intelligence, innovation and intellectual property in order to have an impact over the college community and external sectors.
