Extending trade between El Salvador and Guatemala

El Salvador and Guatemala have implemented a plan to extend the border posts of San Cristóbal, Las Chinamas and Angiatú to speed up one of the most dynamic bilateral trades in the region. From January to July 2022 both countries traded U$S2,086 million.Among other measures, El Salvador and Guatemala analyze to require traders to supply customs authorities with advance information on goods brought into each country. This will provide for better risk analysis, but, at the same time, for quicker process and release upon arrival, resulting in a benefit for traders that should be equal to, if not exceed, any cost or disadvantage of providing information earlier than at present .
In 2020, El Salvador exported U$S876 million to Guatemala. The main products that El Salvador exported to Guatemala are Plastic Lids (U$S56.4 million), Packaged Medicaments (U$S46.6 million), and Baked Goods (U$S41.5 million). During the last 25 years the exports of El Salvador to Guatemala have increased at an annualized rate of 6.06%, from U$S201 million in 1995 to U$S876 million in 2020.
