Fight between food ingredients companies
By Ferraiuoli LLC
On March 2022, Meatless burger maker Impossible Foods sued competitor Motif FoodWorks in a Delaware federal court accusing the startup of copying its technology for imitating the taste of real meat. Now, Motif FoodWorks answered by asking the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to revoke the patent held by Impossible Foods protecting the company’s heme technology, which uses soy leghemoglobin -produced from genetically modified yeast- to imitate the taste and aroma of real beef and pork meat.
Motif FoodWorks filed the petition with the USPTO’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board to ask a panel of judges to review Impossible Foods patent and weigh whether it should be revoked.
Founded in 2011, Impossible Foods is a company that develops plant-based substitutes for meat products. Motif FoodWorks was founded in 2019 as a food ingredients company with technology that enables plant-based and animal-free options to create the meaty taste, appearance and texture.
