Growth in trademark registrations in Peru: Over 36,000 trademarks granted in 2024

2024 marked a significant milestone for intellectual property in Peru, with a total of 36,187 trademark registrations granted as of December 26, representing a substantial increase from the 33,465 registrations achieved in 2023. This surge underscores Peru's strong growth and consolidation as an emerging market, reflecting the initiative and dynamism of entrepreneurs and businesses looking to protect their commercial identity in an increasingly competitive environment.

National trademarks dominated the landscape, with 70.89% (25,652 trademarks) of the registrations granted in 2024 coming from Peruvian applicants. This demonstrates the efforts of Peruvian entrepreneurs to differentiate and safeguard their products and services in the market, ensuring that their trademarks are well-protected. Meanwhile, 29.11% (10,535 trademarks) of the registrations were from foreign applicants, indicating growing international interest in the Peruvian market.

Most Dynamic Sectors in Trademark Registrations

Among the most notable sectors in 2024, pharmaceutical products and medical preparations led with 3,146 registrations (8.69%). This sector has seen robust growth, driven by the demand for medical and healthcare solutions in Peru.

Following closely are the education and entertainment services sector, with 2,886 registrations (7.98%), an area that has seen notable expansion, largely due to the diversification of educational and recreational services available to the Peruvian population.

The advertising and commercial services sector also stood out, with 2,687 registrations (7.43%), reflecting the rise of marketing and communication strategies in an increasingly competitive market. Other important sectors, such as apparel and footwear (2,174 registrations, 6.01%) and food and beverages (2,011 registrations, 5.56%), also experienced significant growth.

Products vs. Services: A Dynamic Balance

An interesting feature of trademark registrations in 2024 is the balance between products and services. Of the trademarks granted, 63.93% were for products (23,133 trademarks), while 36.07% were for services (13,054 trademarks). This balance confirms that both product manufacturing and services continue to play a key role in the national economy's dynamism.

This sustained growth in trademark registrations in Peru is a clear sign of the strengthening of intellectual property as a cornerstone for protecting and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses in the global market. The continued investment by Peruvian entrepreneurs in protecting their trademarks reflects a commitment to quality, innovation, and differentiation in products and services in an ever-evolving business environment.
