Guatemala as an Emerging Audiovisual Destination

By Mayora IP

From November 28 to December 3, Guatemala played host to a delegation of managers and location scouts from Location Managers, a renowned international entity specializing in film production locations. This marked a pivotal moment for the Central American nation as it aims to position itself as a prominent audiovisual destination.

The familiarization tour unfolded across key landmarks, showcasing Guatemala's diverse cultural and historical richness. The delegation's itinerary featured visits to the Historic Center of Guatemala City, Antigua Guatemala, the cities of Flores and Tikal, and the archaeological site of Yaxhá. The experience was supported by AGEXPORT, INGUAT (Guatemalan Tourism Board), and the Municipalities of Guatemala and La Antigua Guatemala.

The primary objective of the visit was to spotlight Guatemala's cinematic and tourist potential. The picturesque landscapes, historical sites, and diverse settings were presented as ideal backdrops for film productions and events.

In a country like Guatemala, with the need to create more formal employment opportunities, the creative industries open interesting opportunities to develop the country, especially for young Guatemalans that have already developed a strong digital talent.

Last year the Guatemalan Tourism Board published a “Guidebook for Cinematography and Audiovisual Productions in Guatemala”, with the objective of strengthening the film industry and promote Guatemala as a film destination.

In terms of exports, there is an estimation of more than USD13 million exported from Guatemala on creative services, sent to markets like the United States, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Europe and the rest of the Central American region.
