Guatemala has the first sustainable rum in the world
The International Sustainability & Carbon Certification Association (ISCC), which contributes to the implementation of environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production and use of all kinds of biomass in global supply chains, granted the ISCC PLUS certification to Guatemalan rum brand Botran, stating Botran’s commitment to be long-term guardians of the environment.

“The ISCC seal of sustainability certification will be on Botran Rum bottles on sale in twenty-eight countries around the world”, the ISCC highlighted. “Premium rums are gaining in popularity all over the world as consumers buy into the tropical ideal they represent. Botran assures consumers that their choice is a responsible one”.

Botran Rum is produced from the virgin sugarcane ‘honey’ from the first pressing of ripened sugarcane. Only 3 % of the world’s rum is made from pure virgin sugarcane juice. Most other rums in the world are produced from molasses, a byproduct of sugar processing. The rum is also protected by the European Union’s 2014 Designation of Origin for “Ron de Guatemala”.
