On March 26, 2023, China and Honduras formally established official diplomatic relations.
Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Eduardo Enrique Reina and his Chinese counterpart Mr. Qin Gang met in Beijing and signed a Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Honduras on Sunday morning, agreeing to develop friendly relations under the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.
According to government officials of Honduras, by establishing diplomatic relations with China, the country hopes to further promote trade and investment, expand the export market, and attract more direct investment from Chinese enterprises in key areas of infrastructure and power generation. The Honduran government has also highlighted that trade is already strong between the two countries, with China being the second-largest exporter of goods to Honduras just behind the United States. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mr. Wang Wenbin said for his part that Beijing welcomed this statement, adding that “China is ready to grow friendly and cooperative relations with all countries including Honduras on the basis of the one-China principle.”
