Honduras Embraces Innovation in Agriculture
By Bufete Mejia & Asociados

The Honduran Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería (SAG) has taken a significant step toward modernizing the agricultural sector by incorporating cutting-edge drone technology into its field operations.
As part of this initiative, SAG has acquired agricultural drones that will be operated by the institution’s technical teams. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are intended to improve agricultural efficiency and bolster pest control efforts across the country’s farming landscape.
The integration of drones into SAG’s agricultural strategy reflects a growing global trend toward precision agriculture — where technology is used to monitor crop health, apply inputs more accurately, and reduce the environmental impact of traditional farming methods. By utilizing drones, Honduras aims to enhance productivity and support its rural agricultural communities with more responsive and data-driven practices.
While this acquisition marks a milestone, it is part of broader technological innovations in Honduran agriculture. For instance, farmers have been training to use drone technology for applying crop inputs and improving cultivation practices, particularly in niche crops such as rambután.
The adoption of drone technology in agriculture also opens opportunities related to patents, intellectual property, and local innovation. As Honduras integrates these technologies, there is growing potential for the development of locally adapted drone systems, software solutions, and agricultural processes that could be patented in the future. Protecting technological innovations through patents encourages research, attracts investment, and promotes collaboration between public institutions, universities, and private companies.
