Honduras to Launch Cybersecurity Project in Response to AI Risks

Honduras is preparing to roll out a national cybersecurity initiative aimed at addressing the growing risks posed by artificial intelligence. Fernando Anduray, president of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), announced that the country will develop a cybersecurity project in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union, with the goal of preventing risks associated with AI use.

The official indicated that an announcement is expected in May, describing the initiative as a mechanism for control and prevention within the telecommunications sector.

Anduray framed the move as a direct response to rising international concern over AI's societal impact. He warned that without proper regulation and guidance, AI could become a factor of social deterioration, noting that people are shaping their understanding of the world through what they consume via AI tools.

The urgency of the project is underscored by the technology's reach. Conatel's head highlighted that AI is already accessible to a large share of the Honduran population, including in rural areas, which makes establishing control frameworks and strengthening digital security across public institutions all the more pressing.

The initiative reflects a broader trend across Latin America, where governments are beginning to move from observation to action on AI governance — seeking to protect citizens while keeping pace with rapid technological change.
