Huawei files for trademark of its operating system in Peru
Chinese multinational technology company Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, filed in Peru an application for trademark Hongmeng OS, an operating system yet to be released and under development by Huawei since 2012. According to Reuters, it may be a “sign” that the company is deploying a back-up plan in key markets in response to United Sates sanctions.

According to Peru’s national IP Office, Indecopi, the application was filed on May 27, 2019, days after the US put Huawei on a blacklist that barred the company from doing business with companies such as Google, whose Android operating system is used in Huawei phones. On May 15, 2019, the US Commerce Department added Huawei and 70 affiliates to its Entity List, banning the company from buying parts and components from US companies without government approval.

On January 28, 2019, the US Justice Department charged Huawei and Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng in federal court with financial fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of justice and sanctions violations.
