On April 26, 2023, the World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated. This day was established by the Organization World Intellectual Property (WIPO) with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of this discipline and its role as a framework for intellectual production, innovation and creativity.
What we understand as Intellectual Property includes the careful treatment of inventions and trademarks, of art in all its manifestations - writing, music, painting, sculpture, architecture and design- and of all creation of the human intellect.
As an inhabitant of the earth, the human being has used its ability to create intellectually as an instrument of survival. It has also used that ability to incorporate into its everyday the energy of the arts that accompany men and women during their life. Music, poetry and painting are a few of human creations that shape the soul of people.
After many years, it has been demonstrated that intellectual property is also a fundamental pillar of the global economy by being an engine for the economic growth of nations and people. Intellectual property allows creators, inventors and businessmen to protect their ideas, inventions and trademarks, giving them the necessary security to invest in research, development of new products and services and a healthy business competition.
The State, as in other areas of human endeavor, becomes the guardian of such holders, being responsible for establishing the appropriate legal framework so that creators can enforce the rights emerged from their production of intellect.
In an increasingly interconnected and digital world, the importance of intellectual property becomes evident. Technology has made possible the creation, distribution and use of digital content, but it has also allowed increased vulnerability of intellectual property. It is therefore important to continue developing policies and legal frameworks that guarantee adequate protection of IP rights.
Intellectual property not only benefits rights holders but all societies, encourages innovation and creativity, adds new products and services in the market and generates employment and wealth. It backs up the diffusion of knowledge and culture, which contributes to the enrichment of society and the inner growth of the human being.
On this World Intellectual Property Day, let's celebrate the achievements fulfilled so far and work together to ensure the adequate protection of intellectual property in the future.
