During the meeting, Nicaragua's Trade Minister Orlando Solorzano said that through successful IP programs the country has managed to greatly increase trademark registrations. Nevertheless, he stated that trademark registrations annual rates are still very low.
"In Nicaragua we usually forget that IP is so essential as having property over a land, over a business, over capital. It´s the registered property of the intellect", Solozano explained, noting that development opportunities for SMEs are still underused throughout the region because IP value is taken lightly. He added that in developing countries such as Nicaragua, there is a general idea that IP is only a matter of concern for first world countries.
According to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade, most of the trademarks and patents registered in Nicaragua belong to foreign companies.
