IP Office introduces new online service

Since September 16, 2020, users of the Costa Rican Trademark Office (Registro Nacional, for its Spanish acronym) can prepare and submit all their trademark applications online through a new electronic application system.

The tool is only available for users registered with the Registro Nacional and who have an active digital signature. The platform receives documents in PDF and images in JPG, JPEG or BMP.

The new service is supported through a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) tool called WIPO File, a single online portal for local agents to file trademark applications with supporting documents. It offers support for post-filing requests, it can be integrated with local payment and authentication systems and it includes an optional fee calculation module.

According to the Registro Nacional, the use of WIPO File will have an immediate impact in Costa Rica’s economy, especially among Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). 

"It is aimed at all sectors, but without a doubt MSMEs can be widely benefited by being able to manage from any locality the registration of their trademarks without having to incur the expense of time and money for a physical presence," said the entity in a statement.
