IP Training for Diplomats and Trade Officials

Twenty-two Mexican diplomats, including those posted abroad, participated in a training organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to build the knowledge and skills they needed to navigate the landscape of IP in the context of international diplomacy and trade.

The training was carried on by the WIPO Academy, a center for IP education, training and skills-building for countries, in particular developing countries, least-developed countries and countries in transition.

The training was delivered over two phases which addressed:

-Fundamentals of IP for diplomats and trade officials;
-Introduction to intellectual property, from copyright and related rights to industrial property;
-Enforcement and emerging IP issues;
-IP in national and international settings;
-IP as a tool for development and economic growth in Mexico and beyond;
-Issues under discussion in the multilateral framework related to IP.

"This program is tailored for diplomats and trade officials who are involved in shaping the international policy framework, leading multilateral discussions and negotiating agreements related to IP," the WIPO stated in a press release.

The training is specially important in an era were IP professionals, legal firms and organizations are promoting intelectual property to public institutions as a catalyst for investment and growth.

Besides preventing counterfeiting and allowing brand protection, IP is a key for attracting foreign investment, stimulating domestic investment, incentivizing research and development and encouraging risk-taking.

Aditionally, IP can be a valuable tool for diplomacy. Embassies, consulates and foreign representations can use IP to promote local products, services, and technologies abroad, stimulating trade and attracting foreign investment. By showcasing the intellectual property of a country, diplomatic missions can build relationships with foreign governments and businesses, fostering economic cooperation and cultural exchange.
