LaLiga’s illegal soccer transmissions blocked in Peru

The National Institute of Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) of Peru, ordered the blocking of six websites that illegally broadcast matches of LaLiga, the association responsible for administering the two professional soccer leagues in Spain. The six websites were among the most popular by number of visits in Peru and had almost 3.5 million monthly visits.

The precautionary measure was taken after a joint lawsuit filed by LaLiga and the Alliance Against Pay-TV Piracy, an association formed by pay-TV operators, programmers and technology providers. “The pay-TV industry will continue to work together through the Alliance to support compliance with the laws and combat theft of signals and any other form of piracy," said Marta Ochoa, co-executive director of the Alliance and director of anti-piracy strategy for DirecTV Latin America.

Pay-TV signal piracy is a multi-billion-dollar problem in Latin America and the Caribbean. It poses daunting challenges for pay-TV operators, programmers, governments and consumers alike.
