Customs from Latin America, Portugal and Spain will meet in May in the Dominican Republic to explore good practices and identify common opportunities and challenges, according to a statement by the Dominican General Directorate of Customs (DGA) published by Dominican Today.
The Meeting of Directors General of Customs of Latin America countries, Spain and Portugal (COMALEP) will bring together at Punta Cana representatives of over 20 signatory countries and delegates from government agencies and the private sector. It provides a platform for members to adjust their operational and management models to adapt and respond to increasingly complex and changing environments. Members will exchange experiences and best practices in the trade facilitation domain, logistics systems, modernization of customs procedures, public-private sector cooperation, blockchain, customer experience and security.
The Regional Conference of Directors Customs Generals of the Americas and the Caribbean (CRDGA) will also take place in the Dominican Republic to tackle issues such as the fight against drug trafficking, information exchange, technical cooperation and assistance between organizations.
The Dominican Republic is working towards establishing itself as the prime logistics hub in the Caribbean, with efforts in place to offer major logistics services in Santo Domingo in the Southcentral, Punta Cana in the East and Manzanillo in the Northwest.
In the country the average clearance takes three days from submission of complete documentation. Clearances can be made in hours if importers make use of the “On-Line Customs Clearance”, which allows for pre-arrival clearance. The on-line service provided at the website of the Customs Office allows importers to register the importation, submit the documentation, verify and pay (before arrival) the amount of taxes to be paid.
