Local trademark applications surpass foreign ones

Local trademark applications surpass foreign ones
In 2014, 60% of trademark applications received by the National Institute for Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) were from foreign citizens, while 40% were from Peruvians. However, that path changed the other way this year: as of December 2016, 60% of trademark applicants are Peruvians and 40% foreigners.

The news, published by web site Gestión, states that the change is due both to the reactivation of the national market and increasing local entrepreneurs more aware of the need to register their products and services. "Nowadays many department stores, retails or supermarkets require their various suppliers to have registered trademarks for selling their products. This did not happen five years ago," said Ray Meloni, director of the Distinctive Signs department of Indecopi.

Pharmaceuticals, textile machinery and insurance and financial services and products are among the economic activities with more Peruvian registered trademarks.
