Los Pleneros de la Cresta on Integrity, Sacrifice and Cultural Legacy
By Ferraiuoli LLC

Los Pleneros de la Cresta, one of Puerto Rico’s contemporary plena groups, discuss their artistic journey, the cultural importance of plena, and the values that have guided their work in an episode of Así Las Cosas por Ferraiuoli, the podcast hosted by attorney Maristella Collazo-Soto, a Capital Member of Ferraiuoli and Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group.
Founded in 2013 by four students from the University of Puerto Rico, Los Pleneros de la Cresta built their career around plena, a traditional Puerto Rican musical genre based on percussion, storytelling, and community expression. The group has worked to preserve this cultural tradition while bringing it to new audiences.
During the conversation, the members explain how plena became more than a musical genre and became a form of cultural identity and expression. They discuss their origins, their connection with Puerto Rican communities, and the importance of maintaining the values and traditions associated with this musical heritage.
The group also recalls important moments in its trajectory, including performances and collaborations that expanded the international visibility of plena. Among them are their collaboration with Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, their performance at Chile’s National Stadium, and their participation in the Super Bowl.
Beyond music, Los Pleneros de la Cresta highlight the importance of creating sustainable opportunities for artists working with traditional cultural expressions. The conversation also addresses the role of organization, long-term planning, and the preservation of cultural heritage in contemporary society.
Through Así Las Cosas por Ferraiuoli, Maristella Collazo-Soto explores conversations that connect law, entrepreneurship, culture, and professional experiences. The episode with Los Pleneros de la Cresta focuses on how tradition can continue evolving while maintaining its connection with its historical roots.
