Matthew McConaughey Trademarks Phrase to Stop AI Misuse
By Ferraiuoli LLC

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has officially trademarked one of his most famous catchphrases, the line “Alright, alright, alright” from the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused, in an effort to protect it from being misused by artificial intelligence (AI) systems and other automated content tools.
As AI tools become better (and more common) at generating speech, video, and text, there’s a growing concern that they could copy or imitate celebrity voices, phrases, or personas without permission. By trademarking his catchphrase, McConaughey is trying to create legal protection against unauthorized commercial or AI-generated use of these signature expressions.
The trademark for “Alright, alright, alright” was filed in December 2023 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and approved in December 2025. It’s described in the trademark documents not just as the three words, but specifically as his voice saying them, including details about pitch and delivery.
