Mexico has joined the NASA-led Artemis Program for space exploration, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The signing of the Artemis Accords was announced at an event led by Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.Ebrard said that the Artemis Program reflects the good relationship between Mexico and the U.S. "It has been discussed for several years, but now it is a reality." He said that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris formally invited Mexico to participate in the program in November. Vice President Harris said on Twitter: "We welcome Mexico's decision to join the Artemis Accords and conduct space exploration responsibly and sustainably."
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson today thanked Mexico for the decision, saying “Today Mexico joins a growing number of nations as the next signatory of the Artemis Accords. We welcome Mexico's leadership in signing the Accords and working with us to explore space responsibly for the benefit of all.”
Mexico's goals in joining the Artemis Program are to carry out activities in outer space that increase the safety of the operations; promote the sustainable use of space for the benefit of all humanity; plan missions and establish channels of collaboration between agencies that can act on behalf of the signatories; and to make new scientific discoveries, create economic benefits and inspire a new generation of explorers.
