Milestone Framework Against Doping
By Guzmán Ariza, Attorneys at Law
The Dominican Republic has a new doping law that establishes a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework to prevent, detect and sanction doping in national sports. We refer to the law 44-23.
The law creates a National Anti-Doping Agency, which will be responsible for implementing and enforcing the law's provisions. The agency will also be responsible for educating athletes and coaches about doping and the risks associated with it.
The law also establishes the need of internal rules establishing the list of the prohibited substances, and to indicate the sanctions against athletes who violates the rules. These sanctions can range from a warning to a four-year suspension from competition.
Last year, World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA's) Director General, Olivier Niggli, addressed the 22nd General Assembly of the Americas Sports Council (CADE) at its in-person meeting in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to call upon the Governments of the region to do everything in their power to strengthen anti-doping and make sure that all clean sport stakeholders are properly resourced.
The annual General Assembly of CADE brought together Sports Ministers and other Government representatives from all over the Americas region with anti-doping in sport featuring as an important element of the discussions.
